Himen Chandra addresses Fiji-Australia Joint Business Forum on labor shortages
Fiji’s economy is grappling with a pressing challenge: a severe shortage of skilled workers compelling businesses to actively seek labor from overseas. This critical issue, impacting operational efficiency and growth prospects across various sectors, is set to be a primary discussion point at the upcoming Fiji–Australia Joint Business Forum.
Himen Chandra, President of the Fiji Australia Business Council (FABC), underscored the significant hurdles businesses face in securing suitable skilled employees. Beyond the immediate difficulty of finding talent, companies also navigate complex processes associated with importing foreign workers. This reflects a deeper systemic challenge in Fiji’s labor market, where local supply struggles to meet demand.
The FABC, recognizing the urgency, is actively collaborating with the relevant government ministry to streamline the framework for foreign labor supply. This collaboration aims to ease the administrative burden and accelerate the integration of international talent. However, the long-term strategic focus extends beyond immediate fixes.
Scheduled for August 27-29 at the Grand Pacific Hotel, the Fiji–Australia Joint Business Forum will also address crucial aspects of workforce development. Discussions will center on capacity building initiatives and enhancing local workforce training, specifically preparing Fijian talent for global employment opportunities. This dual approach—addressing immediate labor gaps while investing in future local capabilities—is vital for Fiji’s sustainable economic growth and competitiveness in the regional and global landscape.
