Coast Guard helicopter hovers over a rescue boat during an active search at sea.
The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a crew member who went overboard from a Norwegian Cruise Line ship bound for Boston. The incident occurred on the Norwegian Breakaway, en route from Bermuda to Boston, approximately 12 miles east of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, according to Boston 25 News.
After being notified, the vessel returned to the location where the crew member was last seen, deploying a rescue boat and life rings. However, the U.S. Coast Guard has since taken over the search and rescue operation, allowing the cruise ship to continue its voyage, according to a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson.
A Coast Guard helicopter and a crew from Coast Guard Station Provincetown joined the search efforts early Sunday morning. Aerial searches are ongoing.
Norwegian Cruise Line has not yet released the identity of the crew member, and the Coast Guard has not confirmed whether the individual has been found. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
This incident follows another recent case involving a Norwegian Cruise Line crew member who went missing from the Norwegian Viva near Costa Maya, Mexico. The search for that individual was later suspended.
The incident has caused a delay in the ship’s return to Boston, potentially pushing back embarkation for its next sailing, according to Cruise Hive.
