Vertex Pharmaceuticals is making a significant move in the rare disease sector, announcing plans to acquire Crinetics Pharmaceuticals for approximately $10 billion. This deal, one of the largest in the pharmaceutical industry this year, is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.
The acquisition aims to diversify Vertex’s existing portfolio by incorporating Crinetics’ treatments for rare hormonal diseases. Key assets include Palsonify, an FDA-approved oral medication for acromegaly, and atumelnant, an experimental drug targeting congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Vertex anticipates this strategic move will contribute to its adjusted operating income by 2029, underscoring the long-term financial and therapeutic potential of the combined entities in addressing unmet needs in rare disease treatment.
