Green steel production at an EAF plant.
Tata Steel has inaugurated a ₹3,200 crore electric arc furnace (EAF) plant in Ludhiana, marking a significant step towards sustainable steel production in India. The 0.75 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) facility will produce Tata Tiscon rebar using 100% scrap and approximately 50% renewable energy.
The new plant aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions, targeting sub-0.3 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per tonne of steel produced. This is a substantial improvement compared to traditional steelmaking processes, aligning with global efforts to decarbonize heavy industries.
By utilizing 100% scrap as raw material, Tata Steel is not only reducing its environmental footprint but also promoting a circular economy. The use of renewable energy further enhances the plant’s sustainability credentials.
This investment signals Tata Steel’s commitment to environmentally responsible manufacturing and positions the company as a leader in green steel production in the Indian market. The Ludhiana plant could serve as a model for future steelmaking facilities, demonstrating the feasibility of sustainable practices in the industry.
