Fujitsu data center facility exterior under overcast sky, with visible branding.
Australian private equity firm Next Capital has agreed to acquire Fujitsu’s Australian data centre business, a move poised to reshape a segment of the nation’s digital infrastructure. This deal, expected to close later this year pending customary conditions and approvals, signifies Next Capital’s re-entry into a market it knows well, having previously invested in iseek before its sale in 2021.
The acquisition encompasses a portfolio of five operational data centres strategically located across Australia, including facilities in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia. For Next Capital, these assets represent a high-quality foundation with substantial growth potential, aligning with the firm’s strategy of active ownership and investment.
Upon completion, the acquired business will be established as an independent platform, shedding its Fujitsu identity for a new corporate brand to be announced. This independence is critical; it allows Next Capital to direct significant investment towards expanding facilities and fostering future growth, responding to the escalating demand for data centre capacity across various sectors. The existing Fujitsu data centre team will transition to the new entity, ensuring continuity and leveraging their operational expertise.
Customers, a vital component of this transition, are not expected to experience immediate operational disruptions. Fujitsu will continue to manage the business until the transaction concludes, after which customer agreements will seamlessly transfer to the new company under their existing terms. This structured handover aims to minimize any impact on service delivery during the ownership change.
This acquisition underscores a broader trend: the insatiable demand for digital infrastructure. Next Capital’s move is a clear bet on Australia’s continued need for data centre capacity, driven by the relentless expansion of cloud services, the burgeoning requirements of artificial intelligence, enterprise digitalization, government initiatives, and robust business continuity workloads. By establishing an independent, well-capitalized entity, Next Capital aims to capture a significant share of this expanding market, positioning the new business as a key player in Australia’s evolving digital economy.
