Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant shift in its distribution strategy, stating that all new PlayStation game releases after January 2028 will be available exclusively in digital formats. This move marks the end of physical disc production for new titles, reflecting a broader industry trend towards digital downloads.
The decision, detailed in a PlayStation Blog post, acknowledges the evolving preferences of consumers who increasingly purchase and download games digitally rather than opting for physical copies. Sony stated, “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” This change will not impact games already released or those scheduled for a physical launch before the January 2028 deadline.
This transition aligns with the wider entertainment sector’s move away from physical media, a trend already evident in music, movies, and PC gaming over the past decade. Digital distribution offers benefits such as reduced manufacturing and shipping costs for companies, and instant access for consumers.
Sony emphasized its commitment to providing players with choices, stating, “We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store.” The company aims to better align with current player access habits while ensuring a continued high-quality gaming experience for its fanbase.
