Jeff Bezos has publicly denied any personal involvement in Amazon’s decision to acquire the documentary about Melania Trump, characterizing the move as a shrewd business strategy rather than an attempt to influence the Trump administration.
Speaking with CNBC, the Amazon founder stated, “The ‘Melania’ thing is a falsehood that will not die.” He emphasized that neither he nor Melania Trump’s office were involved in the deal, despite repeated reports suggesting otherwise.
Bezos acknowledged that the documentary, titled “Melania,” has been a commercial success, performing well in theaters and on streaming platforms. “It appears it was a good business decision. You know, it did very well in theaters, it’s done very well on streaming. People are very curious about Melania,” he commented, adding that the Amazon team made a wise choice, even though he was not personally involved.
The Amazon founder drew parallels to other successful projects, like the film adaptation of “Project Hail Mary,” in which he also had no direct hand, regretting his lack of involvement due to its success. He reiterated that Amazon, as a large corporation, makes numerous decisions independently of him, and the idea of “buying influence” through such acquisitions is incorrect.
The “Melania” documentary, which reportedly cost Amazon MGM Studios $40 million to acquire, provides a look into 20 days of Melania Trump’s life prior to the end of President Donald Trump’s term. The film grossed $16.6 million globally at the box office.
Concerns were previously raised by Democratic lawmakers, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Reps. Hank Johnson, Dan Goldman, and Ben Ray Luján. They sent a letter to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy questioning the film’s substantial cost and suggesting it could be perceived as a pay-to-play arrangement with the Trump administration.
Bezos also briefly touched upon his influence over The Washington Post, stating his desire for its opinion section to champion free markets and individual liberties, which he believes are foundational to America’s success.
