The Australia India Business Council (AIBC) has lauded the joint clean energy strategy announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Viswanathan, Chair of the ‘Make with India’ Focus Group at AIBC, noted a significant shift towards direct commercial corridors between states, praising Modi’s push for decentralized economic diplomacy.
During the Australia-India CEO Forum on Clean Energy and Nuclear Partnerships, the focus was on achieving zero-emission goals. Prime Minister Modi outlined India’s ambitious targets: 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and 100 GW of nuclear energy capacity by 2047. Viswanathan stated that this provided a clear roadmap for both public and private entities.
Modi emphasized Australia’s role in helping India reach its renewable energy target, citing opportunities in clean energy, nuclear power, and infrastructure. He invited Australian technology, capital, and resources to accelerate India’s journey towards net-zero emissions by 2070. India’s growing manufacturing ecosystem for hydro projects, green hydrogen, solar modules, and wind turbines was also highlighted.
The potential for cooperation in civil nuclear energy was also a key point, with India’s 2047 nuclear capacity target aligning with Australia’s uranium reserves. Prime Minister Modi also encouraged Australian investors to participate in India’s infrastructure development, including ports, airports, roads, railways, and urban infrastructure.
