Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered officials to expedite the reopening of loss-making and closed state-owned factories, signaling a significant push to enhance Bangladesh’s investment climate and attract both domestic and foreign capital. The directive, issued during a review meeting on July 4, 2026, emphasizes transparency and efficiency in assessing proposals from interested private companies.
During the meeting, officials reported substantial interest from private sector entities eager to invest in these state-owned enterprises. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of avoiding unnecessary delays and ensuring a transparent process for feasibility assessments. Key figures present included Industries and Jute and Textiles Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, State Minister for Jute and Textiles Shariful Alam, and PM’s Finance and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir.
Concurrently, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin is actively encouraging US investors to deepen their engagement in Bangladesh. Amin highlighted the government’s commitment to creating a stable and business-friendly environment, crucial for attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). He pointed to Bangladesh’s large consumer market, a youthful workforce, and a growing middle class as key opportunities for foreign businesses.
The government is undertaking several measures to improve the investment landscape, focusing on transparency, accountability, good governance, and robust policy frameworks. These include facilitating profit repatriation and offering tax incentives. Priority sectors for bilateral cooperation with the US and other international partners encompass aviation, energy, ICT, textiles, pharmaceuticals, agro-based exports, and flight engineering.
Amin also extended an invitation to skilled Bangladeshi professionals working abroad to contribute to the nation’s development and urged US companies to organize investment roadshows to explore emerging business prospects. He expressed optimism about the future trajectory of economic relations between Bangladesh and the United States.
