Shoppers display "blind box" groceries at an Aldi store.
Aldi is introducing a novel promotion, offering free “Blind Box” grocery bundles to consumers grappling with persistent increases in food costs. This initiative aims to provide relief and an element of surprise to shoppers navigating the current economic climate.
From June 22 to June 25, Aldi will release a new themed “ALDI Blind Box” daily. These boxes will contain a selection of surprise products and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Interested customers can claim one box per day by visiting AldiBlindBox.com, with the boxes being shipped directly to their homes.
The promotion features distinct themed boxes, including a Snack Blind Box, a Fiber Blind Box, a Protein Blind Box, and a general Mystery Blind Box. This “blind box” format, popular in various retail sectors like collectibles and beauty, allows consumers to discover the contents only upon opening.
This giveaway comes at a time when food prices remain significantly elevated. Inflation has exerted considerable financial pressure on U.S. households, driving up the cost of essential goods. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that food prices increased by 0.2% in May, marking a 3.1% rise compared to the previous year. The food at home index saw a 0.1% increase monthly and a 2.7% annual rise.
Specific categories also show notable price changes. While meats, poultry, and fish prices decreased by 0.4% in May, they are still 6.2% higher year-over-year. Beef and veal prices have fallen 1.6% for the month but remain 12.9% above last year’s prices. Egg prices, despite a 4% increase in May, are down 35.2% from the previous year due to normalizing supply after an avian flu outbreak. Fruits and vegetables prices experienced a 0.2% rise for the month, with an annual increase of 6.1%.
Aldi highlighted that many of the items featured in the blind boxes are regularly available in their stores and through their ALDI Finds program. The four-day promotion is designed to offer a unique value proposition to its customer base during a period of economic strain.
