Forensic analysis of baby food in a lab.
A chilling safety scare across parts of Europe has taken a significant turn with the arrest of a 39-year-old suspect in connection with rat poison found in baby food jars. The incident, which involved jars from Germany-based organic baby food maker HiPP, prompted widespread recalls and investigations.
The suspect is currently being questioned by authorities in Austria, according to the Burgenland State Criminal Police Office. HiPP expressed relief at the development, stating, “We are greatly relieved by this development and thank the investigative authorities for their dedicated work.” The company indicated that further updates would follow.
The contamination was first discovered on April 18 when poisoned baby food was found in a jar purchased from a supermarket in Eisenstadt, Austria. Forensic testing confirmed the presence of rat poison. Authorities believe at least one more contaminated product may still be in circulation, despite five tainted jars being pulled from shelves in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia before any consumption occurred.
In response to the incident, HiPP initiated a recall of all its baby food jars from SPAR supermarkets in Austria. Retailers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic also cleared the brand from their shelves. The case reportedly involves attempted extortion, with the blackmailer sending a message to a company mailbox.
HiPP is advising consumers to remain vigilant, checking for warning signs such as damaged lids or unusual odors, and to avoid using any products that show irregularities. The company immediately informed the police upon becoming aware of the blackmail message.
