Police with recovered stolen goods.
In Hemet, California, police have dismantled a retail theft operation, recovering approximately $10,000 worth of stolen LEGO sets and Hot Wheels merchandise. The operation culminated in the arrest of Hugo Omar Sanchez-Sanchez, 37, on charges related to possession of stolen property and organized retail theft.
The Hemet Police Department’s Organized Retail Theft Team, in collaboration with Southwest Cities SWAT, executed a search warrant at a residence on South Gilbert Street. This action followed an investigation triggered by local retailers reporting significant losses of high-value LEGO sets and other items.
According to the police, Sanchez-Sanchez allegedly purchased stolen goods from multiple individuals and resold them for profit at a local swap meet. The recovered merchandise included numerous boxed LEGO sets and Hot Wheels products, all believed to be intended for resale.
Hemet Police Chief Michael Arellano emphasized the department’s commitment to combating organized retail theft, stating that such operations not only hold offenders accountable but also mitigate the financial impact on local businesses.
The arrest and recovery highlight the ongoing challenges retailers face with organized theft and the collaborative efforts required between law enforcement and businesses to address such crimes.
