UN Demands Immediate End to Violence in Sudan Amid Escalating Crisis
The United Nations issued a strong call for an immediate cessation of violence in Sudan on Thursday, urging an end to the targeting of civilians as the conflict reaches a critical point. The international body emphasized the urgent need to halt the fighting and initiate dialogue, calling on all Sudanese parties to return to negotiations. However, the UN also noted that the Security Council has yet to take decisive action to prevent the situation in El Fasher from worsening.
International Condemnation and Calls for Accountability
The UN’s plea for peace was echoed by several member states. The representative of Algeria, Mr. Amar Ben Djamaa, emphasized that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) must not evade accountability for their actions. He condemned, in the strongest terms, the violations and atrocities committed by the RSF, underscoring the necessity for them to be held responsible and deterred. The UK’s representative also called for unhindered humanitarian aid access to El Fasher, highlighting that a military solution to the Sudanese conflict is unattainable, and continued fighting will only deepen the crisis.
Denmark’s representative echoed these sentiments, condemning the manipulation of humanitarian aid in Sudan and demanding justice. She pointed out that the RSF continues to act with impunity, and the level of support in El Fasher is alarming. She added that the situation in Sudan paints a bleak picture, with the cries of the people largely unanswered.
The Situation in El Fasher
The UN’s intervention follows reports of escalating atrocities since the RSF’s control of El Fasher, the last major city under the army’s control in the vast Darfur region. The city had been under siege for 18 months. The UK had previously called for an emergency Security Council session to address the situation in El Fasher, indicating ongoing communication with partners to pressure the warring parties to halt the violence.
The Path Forward
The international community’s unified stance underscores the urgency of the situation in Sudan. The UN’s call for an immediate ceasefire, coupled with demands for accountability and unhindered humanitarian aid, highlights the critical need for a peaceful resolution to prevent further suffering and instability. The focus remains on getting the parties back to the negotiation table.
