Morocco Celebrates UN Decision on Western Sahara Autonomy
Friday evening saw celebrations erupt across Moroccan cities as the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) issued a resolution supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. The decision, which recognizes the Moroccan proposal for self-governance as the sole framework for a resolution, prompted jubilant scenes across the nation.
A Historic Decision
The resolution, which passed with a majority vote, stems from an American draft resolution. This draft calls for negotiations based on the autonomy initiative Morocco presented in 2007. Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained from voting, while Algeria did not cast a vote.
King Mohammed VI, in his first address following the UNSC decision, declared that Morocco is entering a pivotal phase in its modern history. He underscored that the autonomy initiative remains the sole viable path to resolve the decades-long dispute. The King also extended an invitation to Algeria, urging a new chapter of dialogue and collaboration to fortify regional stability and unity.
Calls for Unity and Cooperation
The UNSC’s decision, after 50 years of conflict, is seen as a crucial step. King Mohammed VI, in his address to the nation, emphasized the importance of national unity and strengthening the internal front to confront regional and international challenges. He reiterated that the autonomy initiative is the only serious framework for resolving the conflict.
The King renewed his call for dialogue and understanding with Algeria. He stated, “We extend a sincere invitation to our brothers in Algeria to open a new page, based on cooperation and mutual respect, for the benefit of the two peoples and the region.”
The King further affirmed Morocco’s commitment to finding a solution based on realism and partnership, where no party prevails. He noted that the UNSC’s decision reflects the international community’s support for the Moroccan vision, marking the end of ambiguity surrounding this issue. Moreover, he reiterated Morocco’s commitment to reviving the Maghreb Union based on cooperation and mutual respect.
The Path Forward
The UN Security Council’s vote on the American draft resolution granted Western Sahara self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty and extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for an additional year. The celebrations across Morocco, with citizens waving national flags and chanting unity slogans, reflect the significance of this moment after half a century of struggle.
