Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry Monitors Crisis in Mali, Supports Lebanese Community
In a statement addressing the ongoing situation in Mali, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry has expressed deep concern regarding the country’s current instability. The ministry is closely monitoring the developments, which include heightened security and political tensions, alongside a severe economic crisis and shortages in energy and fuel.
Focus on the Lebanese Community
The Ministry is actively engaged with relevant parties to assess the situation. It is closely tracking the welfare of approximately 3,000 Lebanese citizens residing in Mali. The القائم بالأعمال بالوكالة في سفارة لبنان في ليبيريا (Acting Charge d’Affaires at the Lebanese Embassy in Liberia), which serves as the non-resident embassy for Mali, has been requested to provide continuous updates and enhance diplomatic communication and coordination with other concerned and influential nations in Mali.
According to the ministry’s statement, the مدير الشؤون السياسيّة والقنصليّة (Director of Political and Consular Affairs) met with the القنصل الفخري للبنان في مالي (Honorary Consul of Lebanon in Mali) to explore strategies for managing the crisis. The primary objective is to safeguard the interests of the Lebanese community in Mali.
Efforts to Provide Assistance
The ministry has requested the Honorary Consul to maintain active communication with the Lebanese community in مالي (Mali), address their needs during this challenging period, and provide them with necessary information, guidance, and support. The ministry’s commitment underscores the importance of protecting Lebanese citizens abroad, particularly in regions facing instability.
The situation in Mali is further complicated by a siege of major cities, including the capital city of باماكو (Bamako), by جماعة نصرة الإسلام والمسلمين (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims), affiliated with تنظيم القاعدة (Al-Qaeda). This siege has led to significant crises in these cities, extended to rural areas, and caused a near-complete halt to educational activities. The وزارة الخارجيّة اللبنانية (Lebanese Foreign Ministry) recognizes the severity of the situation and is taking steps to support its citizens during these difficult times.
