Electricians and welders train in a Meta-sponsored academy as data center construction proceeds outside.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is launching the America’s Workforce Academy (AWA) with an initial $115 million investment. This initiative aims to provide free, high-quality training in skilled trades, guaranteeing jobs for all graduates. The program will begin with pilot locations in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and Texas this year.
Graduates will receive a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) credential and an America’s Workforce Certificate, both designed to be transferable across employers and industries. Dina Powell McCormick, Meta’s president and vice-chairman, highlighted the program’s significance in addressing the evolving needs of the workforce, stating, “Skilled workers electrified rural America one pole at a time… Now a new generation will pour the foundations and lay the fiber that secures American strength in this new age.”
This program represents the largest private-sector commitment to skilled trades with a job guarantee in U.S. history. It aims to combat the growing shortage of skilled workers, which is being intensified by the rapid expansion of infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Rachel Peterson, vice president of data centers at Meta, emphasized the need for a robust workforce to support AI infrastructure, noting, “America needs hundreds of thousands of skilled tradespeople — electricians, mechanics, fiber technicians and more — and this program creates clear, accessible pathways into those careers.”
Mike Rowe, CEO of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, praised the initiative for its potential to attract more Americans to skilled trades careers and revolutionize training methods. “Workers are actually paid to learn. There is zero cost to them, no college debt and a fast certification, with a guaranteed job on the other end,” Rowe said, expressing hope that other companies will follow Meta’s lead.
Meta is collaborating with several organizations, including the National Urban League, the Associated Builders and Contractors, CBRE, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, STRIVE, Boone County Economic Development Corporation, the Richland Parish Chamber of Commerce, Workforce Solutions Borderplex, and the Ohio Chamber of Commerce to implement this program.
