Soaring airfares
Domestic airfares in India are poised to increase significantly this summer. Airlines are reducing their weekly flight numbers by 12%, signaling a tighter supply in the market.
This reduction in capacity coincides with the removal of fare caps, which had previously kept a ceiling on how high ticket prices could go. The double whammy of fewer flights and unrestricted pricing is expected to push airfares up.
A significant factor contributing to the anticipated rise in ticket costs is the increasing price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF). Starting April 1, airlines will face higher operating expenses due to rising fuel prices, which will inevitably be passed on to passengers.
Passengers planning to travel within India this summer are advised to book their flights as early as possible to mitigate the impact of the expected fare hikes. The combination of reduced flight availability and increased fuel costs suggests that waiting could mean paying significantly more for the same journey.
