Police investigate drugs found in doll packaging.
Discount retailer Cargo Largo in Missouri unwittingly sold Barbie dolls with cocaine and fentanyl concealed within their packaging, leading to a swift police investigation and recovery of the compromised items.
On March 21, Cargo Largo reported a “suspicious powder substance” found inside the doll packaging, according to the Independence Police Department (IPD). Authorities determined that five of these compromised units had been sold to customers.
“At approximately 10:18 am this morning, IPD was contacted by Cargo Largo Security regarding a suspicious powder substance located in the packaging of a Barbie Doll,” officials stated. The retailer confirmed that initial tests indicated fentanyl, but subsequent tests revealed the substance was cocaine with trace amounts of fentanyl.
The drugs were taped inside the back of the doll packaging. No injuries were reported, and the Barbie Dolls themselves were not compromised.
Cargo Largo identified the source of the contamination and shared the information with law enforcement. Following the discovery, investigators and K9 units conducted a thorough sweep of the store and warehouse, finding no additional risks.
“Moving forward, we will schedule regular inspections of both facilities to maintain a safe environment,” the retailer stated. Police believe no other locations received compromised units.
