Shenzhen to Host APEC Summit in 2026, Addressing AI and Demographics
The city of Shenzhen, a major technology center in southern China, is set to host the 33rd meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in November 2026. This announcement, made by Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlights the growing importance of addressing critical global issues within the APEC framework.
Focus on AI and Demographic Changes
During the annual APEC summit, discussions will center on pressing global challenges. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung expressed his hope for collaborative efforts among Asia-Pacific nations to tackle issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) and demographic changes. These discussions are particularly relevant given the rapid advancements in AI and the evolving demographic landscape, marked by aging populations and declining birth rates.
A session, attended by President Xi Jinping and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Beasant, was held to explore strategies for managing the swift expansion of AI and responding to demographic shifts. APEC’s Global Significance
The APEC bloc represents a substantial portion of the global economy, accounting for 50% of global trade and 61% of the world’s GDP. President Lee emphasized that this changing demographic structure presents a serious crisis affecting all facets of society, making it increasingly difficult to address through isolated solutions.
