Sheikh Qabalan: No Electoral Law to Divide Lebanon
In a statement issued on Friday, Sheikh Ahmad Qabalan, the prominent Jaafari Mufti, underscored the paramount importance of Lebanon’s current and historical role. He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the nation’s integrity, viewing the Lebanese people as a unified national family. This shared identity, he believes, provides the hope and capacity to coexist perpetually.
A Nation United Against Threats
Sheikh Qabalan highlighted the ongoing threat posed by Israel, labeling it an inherently terrorist entity primarily focused on achieving its expansionist goals. He asserted that the primary concern for Lebanon is how to protect itself amidst the Israeli-American push to dominate the region. He believes this will not happen due to the integrated efforts of politics, security, military, resistance, and national unity.
Speaking at the Imam Hussein Mosque in Bourj el-Barajneh, Sheikh Qabalan noted that history has shown Israel’s fear and reliance on force. He urged Lebanon to coordinate its internal capabilities, national unity, and sovereign potential. He viewed President Joseph Aoun’s stance as particularly patriotic, aligning with the critical moment Lebanon faces. He sees the Lebanese army, the resistance, and the populace as a sovereign shield, capable of achieving the significant national goals despite the costs involved.
Electoral Concerns and Regional Dynamics
Sheikh Qabalan expressed concern over the stances of political factions, including the Lebanese Forces, warning that their actions could serve only Israel’s interests. He pointed out that Washington views Lebanon through the lens of Tel Aviv. He emphasized that all Lebanese regions, from the south to Beirut, the mountain, the Bekaa, and the north, are united and have demonstrated their national commitment during critical times.
Sheikh Qabalan stressed the need for a different approach towards Israel, as it responds only to determination and firmness. He noted that Israel’s strategy of intimidation, displacement of residents from front-line villages, and daily acts of violence is a continuous project. He called for setting limits on this project and relying on national capabilities like national unity, steadfastness, and Lebanese solidarity. He reminded everyone that the national moment requires the participation of all, irrespective of electoral or other interests.
Regarding the electoral process, Sheikh Qabalan opposed any electoral law that could fragment the country or favor specific groups over others. He argued against the idea of allowing expatriates to vote only for the president, not for representatives, and the lack of equal opportunities abroad. He views such actions as undermining the national electoral balance.
Regional Alliances and Future Outlook
Sheikh Qabalan called for a comprehensive understanding of the region’s dynamics, asserting that current events do not serve Lebanon or any particular sect. He believes the solution lies in a national stance that honors the legacy of the founding fathers and the liberated sons. He urged all political forces to end the current silence.
He emphasized that Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia must urgently protect the region, as time is running out. He warned that any misjudgment could lead to regional collapse, benefiting only America and Israel. He also highlighted the importance of protecting Syria and preventing Western influence, considering it a crucial regional necessity for Syria, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Lebanon. He advocated for a special relationship with Syria and emphasized the need for Lebanese-Syrian solidarity and cooperation.
Sheikh Qabalan concluded that regardless of the circumstances, Lebanon will remain committed to its national principles, rejecting occupation and political or sovereign humiliation. He affirmed that the nation’s commitment to national unity and the readiness of Lebanon’s capabilities are the most vital for the country’s sovereignty.
