Lebanon and Germany Discuss Reconstruction and Regional Stability
In a recent meeting, Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji engaged with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, to address critical issues concerning Lebanon’s future. The discussions, held in Beirut, focused on key areas such as reconstruction, regional stability, and the ongoing challenges facing the nation.
Focus on Arms Control and Reconstruction
A central theme of the talks revolved around the importance of arms control within Lebanon. Minister Rajji emphasized that controlling weapons is the fundamental step towards reconstruction, economic recovery, and overall prosperity. He sought Germany’s support in pressuring Israel to halt its aggressions, withdraw from occupied territories, and adhere to its commitments under the cessation of hostilities agreement.
The Lebanese government’s commitment to gradually implementing the decision to restrict weapons to the state was highlighted. Minister Rajji acknowledged the Lebanese Army’s ongoing efforts in this regard. Germany’s Foreign Minister Wadephul praised the Lebanese government’s decision to control weapons and expressed his country’s support for the measures taken to establish control in the South and throughout Lebanese territories.
Regional Stability and Diplomatic Solutions
Both ministers agreed that diplomatic solutions, rather than military ones, are essential for achieving stability in the region. Wadephul stressed that the continuation of Israeli attacks on Lebanese territories is unacceptable, underscoring the need for Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty. The meeting also addressed the importance of regional stability, with Germany viewing Lebanon’s stability as key to the broader region.
Additional Discussions
The meeting also covered the Syrian refugee issue, with Wadephul reiterating Germany’s support for Lebanon’s stance on the return of refugees to their homeland. Rajji stressed that supporting Lebanon’s position must be accompanied by encouraging the refugees’ return and providing them with financial assistance within Syria. Furthermore, discussions included the issue of filling the void after the end of the UNIFIL mission and the ideas being discussed in this regard.
The meeting was attended by German Ambassador Kurt Georg Stöckl-Stillfried and members of both delegations. They discussed prominent issues in Lebanon and the region, as well as bilateral relations and ways to develop cooperation between the two countries. Wadephul also briefed Rajji on his visit to Syria.
The talks between Lebanon and Germany signal a continued commitment to address critical challenges and foster cooperation for a more stable and prosperous future.
