New research suggests that GLP-1 weight loss medications containing the active ingredient tirzepatide, including Mounjaro and Zepbound, may significantly reduce cardiovascular risks for individuals with serious heart conditions. Experts believe these benefits stem from the drugs’ effectiveness in promoting weight loss and managing blood sugar levels.
Reduced Cardiovascular Risks Observed
Two studies presented at the SCAI 2026 Scientific Sessions & CAIC-ACCI Summit in Montreal indicate that tirzepatide-based GLP-1 drugs could lower heart-related risks for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and those with obesity receiving transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). While these studies have not yet been published in peer-reviewed journals, they add to existing evidence on the cardiovascular benefits of these medications.
One study found a remarkable 62% lower risk of death among participants who received tirzepatide and underwent PCI. Srihari Naidu, MD, SCAI President, noted that GLP-1 agonists represent a significant advancement in cardiometabolic care, with emerging understanding of their impact on patients undergoing interventional heart procedures.
Specific Findings from Studies
In the first study, researchers analyzed data from adult participants with type 2 diabetes who received tirzepatide or older medications like dulaglutide at the time of PCI. Participants using tirzepatide showed lower rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and ventricular arrhythmias, one month after PCI. These reductions in MACE, myocardial infarction, and heart failure exacerbation remained consistent one year later, with further observed reductions in mortality, stroke, and cardiac arrest.
The second study focused on adults with obesity who underwent TAVR. Participants who did not receive tirzepatide experienced worse outcomes, including a 54% higher risk of hospitalization for acute heart failure and a 44% increased frequency of MACE. While no significant differences were noted in rates of ischemic stroke, acute myocardial infarction, or acute kidney injury between groups, the findings underscore the potential protective effects of tirzepatide.
Understanding the Benefits and Lifestyle Factors
Experts emphasize that the heart health benefits of GLP-1 drugs like tirzepatide and semaglutide are derived from their ability to promote weight loss and manage blood sugar levels. These medications mimic natural gut hormones, aiding in weight loss and improving control over key cardiovascular disease drivers such as blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Emerging evidence also suggests potential direct beneficial effects on the heart and blood vessels.
However, experts stress that these medications are most effective as part of a comprehensive lifestyle change plan. Maintaining a healthy diet, incorporating regular physical activity, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol are crucial for overall health and long-term weight management. Patients are advised to work closely with healthcare providers to monitor for side effects and set realistic long-term goals.
