Lebanon Begins Review of Overseas Voting Mechanisms
In a move signaling its commitment to inclusive elections, a joint committee from Lebanon’s Interior and Foreign Ministries held its inaugural meeting to address the mechanics of voting for Lebanese citizens residing outside the country. The meeting, which took place at the Interior Ministry building, saw the participation of key figures including Ministers Ahmed Al-Hajjar and Youssef Rجي.
Focus on Implementation
The primary objective of this initial gathering was to study the implementation of Article 11 of the law concerning the election of members of the Parliament, specifically concerning the voting process for non-resident Lebanese. The committee’s work is crucial, especially considering the upcoming parliamentary elections. The ministers emphasized their dedication to adhering to existing legal procedures and deadlines, regardless of ongoing discussions and proposed changes within the Parliament and the Council of Ministers regarding the election law.
Reviewing Past Efforts
As part of its mandate, the committee will delve into the materials related to overseas voting. It will also review a report prepared in 2021, providing a foundation for its current deliberations. The committee is expected to submit a report summarizing its findings and recommendations.
Ensuring Participation and Transparency
Ministers Al-Hajjar and Rجي highlighted the importance of conducting parliamentary elections on schedule. They also underscored the need to ensure the effective participation of Lebanese citizens living abroad. The aim is to uphold the right of expatriates to vote transparently and smoothly, thereby fostering trust in the electoral process among all Lebanese citizens. This effort reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that all Lebanese voices, regardless of location, are heard in the democratic process.
