Pixel 6 & 7 Pro Owners Miss Out on Precise UWB Tracker Location
For those relying on ultra-wideband (UWB) trackers with their Google Pixel phones, there’s a significant caveat. While Google introduced UWB support with the Pixel 6 Pro back in 2021, the capability for precise location tracking is notably absent on older models like the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro. This limitation has been confirmed by Google to Android Authority, creating a frustrating experience for users who own these devices.
The Hardware is There, But…
The Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro both possess the necessary hardware to utilize UWB for precise tracking. However, Google has chosen not to enable this feature on these older models. The company hasn’t provided a clear explanation for this decision. The Verge has reached out to Google for comment and will update its reporting if a response is received.
Limited Compatibility and Few Options
The restriction isn’t just about the phones; it also extends to the UWB trackers themselves. Currently, only a handful of Android-compatible trackers support this technology. Google’s own Find Hub network, which gained support for UWB precise tracking earlier this year, further highlights this limitation. Samsung’s SmartTag Plus, which supported UWB, has been discontinued, leaving users with limited choices.
The only current option available appears to be Motorola’s Moto Tag, a $29 tracker. This tracker began supporting UWB precision finding earlier this year through a firmware update, offering a glimmer of hope for those seeking precise location capabilities.
Looking Ahead
The lack of UWB precise tracking on older Pixel models is a disappointment for users who invested in these devices. As the technology matures and more UWB trackers become available, the limitations of older Pixel phones could become even more apparent. For now, owners of the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro will have to settle for less precise location data, a notable drawback in a market where accuracy is key.
