Amazon Shifts Gaming Focus: MMOs Out, Party Games In
Amazon is making major changes to its gaming strategy, according to a memo from Steve Boom, VP of audio, Twitch, and games. The company is halting a significant amount of its first-party AAA game development work, especially in the MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) space. This shift includes role reductions in its studios in Irvine and San Diego, as well as its central publishing team.
MMOs Take a Hit
The decision impacts several MMO projects. The developers of New World: Aeternum, for example, have announced they will stop providing new content updates. While the game’s servers will remain live through 2026, this move signals a change in Amazon’s approach to the genre. Other MMOs in Amazon’s portfolio include Throne and Liberty and Lost Ark. Furthermore, a planned Lord of the Rings MMO in partnership with Embracer Group and a Western release of the Bandai Namco-developed Blue Protocol have been affected.
Focus on Casual and AI-Driven Games
Despite the changes, Amazon isn’t abandoning game development altogether. The company is focusing on casual and AI-focused games optimized for its Luna platform. The recent launch of the revamped Luna, with its catalog of social party games and AAA blockbusters, is a key part of this new strategy. Amazon’s Studio 5 team, known for developing Courtroom Chaos: Starring Snoop Dogg for Luna, will continue to create these types of games.
In addition, Amazon is still collaborating with Crystal Dynamics on a new Tomb Raider game and with Maverick Games on an open-world driving game. The Montreal studio recently concluded a successful closed alpha for March of Giants, indicating that Amazon is still invested in game development, albeit with a different focus.
The strategic changes are aimed at delivering top-tier gaming experiences while leveraging Amazon’s strengths, such as streaming entertainment and providing value for Prime members. Steve Boom emphasized the difficult nature of these decisions, acknowledging the impact on employees. The company is adapting to the evolving games industry and competitive landscape.
