Qatar Calls for Clear Mandate for International Force in Gaza
During a recent interview, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, emphasized the necessity of a clear mandate for the international force slated to be deployed in Gaza. This statement, made on Sunday, underscores the critical need for a well-defined framework to ensure the force’s effectiveness and legitimacy.
The Importance of a Clear Mandate
Speaking to CNN, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani highlighted the importance of a clear mandate for the international force, stating that Qatar is working with Washington to secure it. He also noted that the communication channel between the people of Gaza and the international force should be Palestinian. This emphasis on a Palestinian-led approach is crucial for establishing trust and ensuring the force’s operations align with the needs of the local population.
The Prime Minister also mentioned discussions among all Palestinian factions to form a technocratic committee. This committee would oversee Gaza’s affairs during the transitional period, demonstrating a commitment to local governance and self-determination. He further stated that Gaza and the West Bank are inseparable, forming a single unit that represents the future Palestinian state. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani reiterated the only viable solution is the two-state solution, regardless of differing opinions among Israeli politicians.
International Support for a UN Mandate
Echoing Qatar’s stance, Jordan and Germany have also voiced their support for an international force in Gaza, contingent on a mandate from the United Nations Security Council. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi stressed that an UN mandate is essential for the stability force to effectively carry out its mission. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed Berlin’s support for granting the international force a UN mandate, recognizing that it would require clear backing under international law.
The statements from Qatar, Jordan, and Germany reflect a broader international consensus on the importance of a robust, internationally recognized framework for any peacekeeping efforts in Gaza. The emphasis on a Security Council mandate underscores the need for legitimacy and international cooperation in addressing the complex challenges in the region.
