Geagea: Disarming Militias Crucial for Lebanon’s Stability
In a recent statement, Lebanese Forces party leader Samir Geagea underscored the critical need for Lebanon to address its deteriorating conditions. He asserted that the only path forward involves a firm decision to disband all unlawful military and security organizations. Geagea believes that any other measures, such as debating the inclusion of civilian Lebanese members in the mechanism, risk wasting precious time for a country already struggling with instability and facing serious threats.
Key Priorities for Lebanon’s Recovery
Geagea outlined several key priorities for the current situation: establishing a permanent cessation of hostilities, ensuring the actual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, completing the demarcation of land and sea borders, launching an urgent reconstruction program, and initiating an economic revival to guarantee a dignified life for citizens. He emphasized that the sole entry point to achieve these goals is by restricting weapons to the state. Geagea also invited alternative solutions, stating that solutions are not made by formal arrangements but by clear, decisive, and courageous decisions.
Focus on Disarmament and State Sovereignty
Geagea’s statements were made during preparations for the electoral machine in a meeting held by the party’s General Secretariat at the general headquarters in Maarab, under the title of the 2026 parliamentary elections. The meeting was attended by key figures, including Secretary-General Emile Mkarzel, Assistant Secretary-General for Interests Nabil Abu Jodeh, Assistant Secretary-General for Elections Jad Damyan, and heads of various sectors and departments. Addressing the attendees, Geagea stated that the core issue is not who will represent Lebanon within the mechanism, but rather the fundamental decision to restore the state’s sovereignty and control over weapons and power across every inch of its land. He highlighted that disarming the state and dissolving illegal military and security organizations is the true test of the authorities’ commitment to the rule of law.
A Clear Roadmap for Action
Geagea called for a clear and binding roadmap to implement the decision to restrict weapons to the state, with a timeline for geographical implementation and measurable stages. He affirmed that the Lebanese Forces will remain at the forefront in choosing the state, sovereignty, and the right of the Lebanese people to lasting security and stability. He emphasized that the party will not accept superficial solutions, as they cannot replace a strict national decision that embodies Lebanon’s transition from chaos to the rule of law. From this perspective, the party is participating in the elections with seriousness and professionalism, aiming to strengthen its presence in the parliament and expand the representation of sovereign forces to ensure a greater role in national decision-making and advancing matters in the direction desired by the popular majority.
