WhatsApp Enhances Chat Protection with New Passkey Feature
In a move to bolster user security, WhatsApp has announced the launch of its Passkeys feature. This new addition offers a more accessible and secure method for accessing encrypted chat backups. According to the company, the feature will be gradually rolled out to users in the coming weeks.
Simplified and Enhanced Security
The new feature allows users to restore their backups without the need to enter complex passwords or memorize lengthy encryption keys. Instead, users can rely on their fingerprint, facial recognition, or the screen lock code previously used on their device. This simplifies the process while maintaining a high level of security.
WhatsApp previously introduced end-to-end encryption for backups in 2021, utilizing passwords or 64-character keys. While this was a significant step in data protection, users had to manually remember these keys to restore their data, as noted by TechCrunch.
With the introduction of Passkeys, WhatsApp emphasizes that the process has become both simpler and more secure, combining ease of use with robust protection. This update is particularly crucial given that WhatsApp surpassed 3 billion active users between May and June, making the enhancement of security tools a top priority.
How to Activate and Check Availability
To enable encrypted backups or verify the availability of the Passkeys option, users can navigate within the app through: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-End Encrypted Backup.
With this step, WhatsApp continues to develop its security tools, aiming to provide users with greater confidence in the protection of their data and privacy. This update underscores WhatsApp’s commitment to user security in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
