Geagea: Dissolving Military Groups is the Key Decision for Lebanon
In a statement released on Saturday, Samir Geagea, the leader of the Lebanese Forces Party, addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding the inclusion of Lebanese civilians in the mechanism committee. He asserted that the core decision for the state to make is the dissolution of all illegitimate military and security organizations throughout Lebanon.
Geagea directed his message to the President and the Prime Minister, emphasizing that the focus should not be on the representation of military or civilian members within or outside the mechanism. Instead, he stressed the importance of the government’s decision to address the presence of unauthorized military groups.
Geagea’s Stance on Lebanon’s Path Forward
Geagea explained that if this decision is enacted, it would pave the way for a solution, regardless of the representatives involved. However, if this crucial step is not taken, Geagea believes that all other efforts would be a waste of precious time. He highlighted the urgency of this moment for Lebanon and its people, emphasizing the need to establish a functional state, achieve lasting stability, remove Israel from Lebanon, and return to the armistice agreement. Furthermore, Geagea underscored the importance of this time for reconstruction, reviving the Lebanese economy, and restoring prosperity to the Lebanese people.
Before this statement, Geagea had also commented on X, formerly Twitter, regarding the remarks of Sheikh Naim Qassem. Qassem had stated that America is not an impartial mediator but the primary supporter of the aggression. Geagea responded by requesting Sheikh Naim to find an unbiased mediator who can compel Israel to halt its attacks on Lebanon and withdraw its army. He expressed gratitude for such an endeavor.
The core of Geagea’s message is clear: achieving long-term stability in Lebanon requires a definitive move to dismantle all unauthorized military groups. This is seen as the critical first step toward rebuilding the nation and ensuring its security and economic prosperity. The political tensions in Lebanon, as highlighted by the statements of Geagea, reflect the complex challenges the country faces in its pursuit of peace and stability. The ongoing conflict with Israel and the role of Hezbollah, as well as the need for border demarcation with Syria, are all part of this complicated situation.
