Residential street in the UK with solar panels on many rooftops
London-based startup Axle Energy has successfully secured US$25 million in Series A funding, led by Energize Capital, marking a significant step in scaling its virtual power plant (VPP) platform. This investment is poised to accelerate the company’s expansion across the UK and facilitate its entry into international markets, while also fostering deeper collaborations with major vehicle manufacturers, utilities, and fleet operators.
Axle Energy’s VPP network currently integrates over 300,000 decentralized energy assets, including crucial components like EV chargers, home batteries, and solar panels. Collectively, these assets contribute more than 2GW of flexible capacity to the grid. The core innovation lies in the VPP’s sophisticated software, which links these disparate devices, allowing them to operate as a unified, responsive power plant. This capability is vital for balancing electricity supply and demand, particularly during periods of peak consumption.
The strategic implications of this expansion are considerable. By leveraging existing energy infrastructure more effectively, Axle Energy aims to reduce the necessity for new generation capacity and lessen reliance on volatile fossil-fuel markets. This approach not only enhances energy security but also offers a tangible benefit to participants, who reportedly earn an average of £10 (approximately US$13.44) per month for their involvement. Karl Bach, CEO and Co-Founder of Axle Energy, highlighted that VPPs are instrumental in unlocking the unused flexible capacity within millions of devices, thereby supporting grid stability and creating value across the broader energy ecosystem.
Investors recognize the critical role Axle Energy plays in the evolving energy landscape. Tyler Lancaster of Energize Capital and Zhenya Loginov of Accel both underscore the VPP model as a crucial solution for mitigating grid strain, which is increasingly exacerbated by rising electricity demand from electrification and the burgeoning needs of AI infrastructure. Their investment signals a strong belief in Axle Energy’s potential to enhance energy security and resilience on a global scale, positioning the company as a key player in the transition to a more flexible and sustainable energy future.
