The European Investment Bank (EIB) has committed €250 million to significantly enhance energy efficiency across Italy. This substantial financing package, with a 15-year maturity, will be channeled through Italgas Group’s subsidiaries, Geoside and Italgas Properties. The initiative aims to drive down energy consumption, increase the use of renewable energy sources, and modernize vital infrastructure.
The investment, set to unfold between 2026 and 2029, will support a range of projects. These include the energy-efficient renovation of both public and private buildings, improvements in industrial energy efficiency, the installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, and the modernization of public lighting networks. The initial €150 million tranche has already been secured, with the remainder contingent on project progress.
According to EIB projections, these efforts are expected to yield considerable environmental benefits. An annual saving of 30.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of primary energy is anticipated, alongside the generation of approximately 21.5 GWh of renewable energy each year. This renewable energy output is roughly equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 8,200 Italian households. This marks a significant collaboration, being the second framework loan from the EIB for Italgas’s energy efficiency investments and the ninth overall, bringing the total EIB lending to the Italgas Group to over €1.9 billion.
EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti emphasized the agreement’s importance in facilitating large-scale investments in energy efficiency, particularly within fragmented sectors that often encounter funding hurdles. Italgas CEO Paolo Gallo underscored energy efficiency as a critical strategy for reducing energy consumption, bolstering energy security, and improving both competitiveness and environmental sustainability. Gallo also highlighted how the financing will empower the company to develop advanced solutions leveraging Geoside’s proprietary technologies and internal AI systems to optimize building and infrastructure efficiency and decrease overall energy demand. This comprehensive program aligns directly with Italy’s national energy transition objectives, aiming to achieve lower emissions, enhance energy resilience, and promote greater sustainability.
