Jakarta, Indonesia – Japanese eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft developer SkyDrive has unveiled a full-scale mockup of its ‘SKYDRIVE (SkyDrive Model SD-05)’ in Jakarta, marking its first international exhibition. The event, held in collaboration with Indonesian helicopter operator Whitesky Aviation from June 23-24, 2026, at Whitesky’s Cengkareng Heliport, highlighted significant demand from Indonesia’s mining, agriculture, and government sectors. This move positions SkyDrive to address critical issues like Jakarta’s severe traffic congestion and logistical challenges in regional industries.
Indonesia’s vast geography and infrastructure gaps present a unique opportunity for eVTOL solutions. The Jakarta metropolitan area alone reportedly suffers an estimated 65 trillion rupiah in annual economic losses due to traffic congestion. In remote regions like Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra, eVTOLs could provide vital shuttle services for mining operations, offer emergency medical transport, and enhance agricultural surveillance capabilities, overcoming limitations of existing road networks.
SkyDrive and Whitesky Aviation, who formed a strategic alliance in August 2025, are exploring diverse applications beyond initial urban air taxi concepts between Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and central Jakarta. The proposed eVTOLs promise lower operating costs, reduced emissions, and quieter operations compared to traditional helicopters, making them an attractive alternative for both urban mobility and industrial support.
The exhibition garnered keen interest from Indonesian government officials, including representatives from The Ministry of Creative Economy/Agency for Creative Economy and the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia. Officials expressed commitment to developing flexible regulatory frameworks to facilitate commercial operations, targeting a launch as early as 2029. This public-private collaboration aims to build a comprehensive ecosystem for advanced air mobility in Indonesia.
SkyDrive and Whitesky Aviation will now focus on gathering data for feasibility studies, navigating certification processes with Indonesian authorities, and preparing the necessary infrastructure and operational systems for commercial eVTOL flights. The initiative underscores a growing global trend towards adopting innovative aerial solutions for urban and regional challenges.
