BPRL Acquires Videocon’s Global Oil and Gas Assets, Bolstering India’s Energy Security
Bharat PetroResources Ltd (BPRL), the upstream arm of Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), has successfully completed the acquisition of Videocon Industries’ global oil and gas assets. This strategic move, valued at approximately ₹2,500 crore, includes crucial offshore blocks in Brazil and Indonesia, significantly enhancing India’s long-term energy security by securing future oil production from prospective fields.
The acquisition addresses Videocon’s substantial outstanding debt of nearly ₹30,000 crore owed to a consortium of 13 banks. Lenders have agreed to a significant haircut, estimated at around 90 percent of the debt, as part of this transaction. The deal culminated after extensive legal and corporate proceedings, including resolutions before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), alongside investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
With this acquisition, BPRL gains complete ownership of Videocon’s international upstream interests. A key asset is a deepwater offshore block in Brazil, which has received positive investment recommendations. The total estimated capital expenditure for the Brazilian project is nearly ₹60,000 crore. BPRL plans to invest approximately ₹28,000 crore for its 40 percent participating interest, while Petrobras will continue as the operator, investing about $3.2 billion. Production from this significant block is anticipated to commence by 2030. BPRL intends to finance its investment through debt raised in the Netherlands, aiming for a more efficient financial structure.
